james blake is just like marat safin in that the potential for greatness is there. these guys just tend to beat themselves. you've seen it -- the way blake talks to himself and pouts after lost points, shaking his head, beating himself up. you know when you see him do that, he's going to lose. safin is the same way. the frustration shows and they're not able to get past it. it's sad, because like the american media, i'd love to see blake win a slam for a change. it's not like he hasn't won tournaments before. he just can't dance when it's time for the big show.

The truth about James Blake is that he is just a decent tennis player.  Good enough to compete, but not good enough to win a grand slam.  That's not a knock, but just the truth.  He'll be competetive, but he's not good enough to win the big ones.  Bud Collins said that a couple of years ago about him.  Doesn't mean that he's not a nice guy.  Just means that he's a decent but not superstar player.  What separates the great ones from average players like Blake (and Roddick) is that you can't get caught playing 5 set matches in the early rounds of grand slams and expect to win it all. Federer and Nadal take care of business in those early rounds.  3 sets and done.  Year after year and match after match, Blake starts out with those 5 setters against relatively unknown players.  He'll never win a grand slam playing that way. Even though the american media is desperate for an american champion, Blake is not good enough and Roddick is not confident enough.  Nothing personal, just the truth.

The more correct statement is that he is clearly not a great player. He's basically a stiff. Like Roddick, he relies almost entirely on a power game. There isn't an ounce of elite talent in his game and he doesn't have much tennis IQ.

Gulbis is a tough competitor.  James Blake is alright, he just needs to be more consistent.

agreed... antoehr terrible perfomance at a Grand Slam.. losing in the 2nd round to Gulbis was pathetic given he had was serving for the 1st set at 5-3, eventually losing in a tie-break. Not to mention the all the chances he had in the 4th set before giving up and submitting to another below par effort....

Can't see this guy ever winning a big tournament!!
