Roger Federer's Fan Forum

The media portrays Federer as a great athlete (which he is) and great sportsman (which he isn't entirely). The same media which portrayed Ivan Lendl in a bad light despite great achievements (only player to re-gain no. 1, etc despite playing in the era of JMc, Borg, Cash, Willander, etc) and is a great personality, the same media that criticised Kournikova's achievements despite her impressive doubles record and frequent no. 1 rank in doubles (her speciality), the same media we love to hate.

Federer has not been criticised - maybe not been seen - by the media as being arrogant, classless, disgraceful when he loses, discredits his opponents who beat him, disrespectful to young up-and-coming players because he forgot where he came from, because the media chooses not to.

Federer is lucky. If he was unlucky like Lendl, his achievements would be overlooked just the same. But he's popular and has a large fan base. The media is better off going with the flow. But there are few who can see Roger for who he truely is, including tennis fans, and even Mirka who had to tell a jounalist recently not to wax lyrical to Roger about his achievements because of "how cocky he was already getting".

"*** you you stupid! How can you say this about probably the greathest player ever. and he is also a nice guy. Look at his interviews and then talk you stupid f**K."

Federer's interviews are why I think he's classless and arrogant.  Of course he's a great tennis player.  The problem is he's even better at coming up with new ways to describe his own greatness, make excuses for his losses, and minimize the accomplishments of his opponents.  When other athletes do this, they get labeled as braggarts, yet somehow Federer gets labeled a great sportsman.

His U.S. Open win pulled him within one title of Pete Sampras' Grand Slam record, but Federer was undecided on whether he would prefer to win his first French Open crown in 2009 or his sixth Wimbledon.

"That's a pretty hard question to answer," Federer said. "I'll probably have the answer in August."

Roger Federer is the curse of the ATP. His arrogance knows no bounds and he's always finding ways to make his losses seem insignificant. I hope he doesn't win a single slam next year.

Here's Roger giving his opponent credit for playing well. 

Nah, who am I kidding.  Here's Roger blaming his loss on his stomach ailment and patting himself on the back for playing so well in spite of it. 

"Normally, best of three match, it's peanuts. So it was a pity I couldn't handle it today."

"I almost made a miracle happen, you know . . . I can't believe how close I got, to be honest. So I'm actually very happy."

Yes, Roger Federer, humble and gracious in defeat, as always. 

Once Andy Roddick withdrew because of his ankle, all Federer had to do to make it to the semis in Shanghai was to beat one player in the top 10.  He still couldn't pull it off.  What a way to end 2008, Roger. 

I'm sure he'll tell us it was his back, or his stomach virus, or lingering effects from mono.  LOL.
