Stephen King

The first book I read by him was the green mile. I enjoyed it enough to read another book by him: Misery. I thought Misery was great so I decided to read another: Pet Semetery. I thought it was pretty good until the half way mark where it started to get lame. Not a good book, but not bad enough for me to stop reading his work. next I bought Insomnia and that had the same problem as Pet Semetery. It sucked me in until the halfway mark when it started with the bald midget, doctor bullshit. Then I bought Different Seasons as I heard it was some of his best. I liked them, so next I got the gunslinger. Again, good at first but I lost interest about a quarter of the way, and by the end I hated it. I'm currently reading Rage and I am a quarter through with no more interest to finish, but my ocd probably wont let me stop. Stephen King is very hit and miss with me, but I wouldn't go so far to say he's a talentless hack.
Stephen King sucks. I have enjoyed some of his short stories but he just wastes a lot of pages in thick novels. All that unnecessary character development and writing non-stop w/o making sense has made me stop reading his books. I just can't take any more of his s***. He wasted my precious time. I don't know what people like about him.

Stephen King

I am in a writers group of roughly a dozen members who meet biweekly. Amongst our discussions the name Stephen King pops up from time to time and a debate often ensues between those of us who regard him as a no talent hack and those who think he is a decent writer. My problem when attempting to participate in this debate is a lack of critical insight, because every time I've ever picked up a Stephen King novel, I've put it down by the time I reach page fifty because his writing style is so sloppy I simply can not endure another page of it. The result is I have not read enough of his material to offer credible commentary. (Actually, I managed to finish "Thinner" and that's several hours of my life I'll never get back.) Is there any specific site or resource which can give me this ammunition? I don't want to have to endure another entire Stephen King book just to point out to my fellow writers what a bad example this joker has set. Please help!
Stephen King

Many of these comments show discernment. In my opinion, King's fiction is uneven at best. He's written some real stinkers, such as "Lisey's Story," "Bag of Bones," and "Duma Key," although "Desperation" shows that he can write decent horror on (rare) occasion. I agree that, in general, his endings are bad--about as bad as those of Bentley Little. He's also patronizing in the way he forces his political views on his readers, assumes that what he admires others will also admire, and seems to reckon himself to be the spokesman of all who read his books. He used to write memorable and intriguing, even , at times, compelling characters, but they are more and more just cardboard figures. The endings to "It" and "Under the Dome" were two of his lamest! What ripooffs, especially after hundreds of pages. Dean Koontz is another formulaic hack. I'm reading Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child lately, and, on occasion, James Rollins (although they, too, tend to tell the same story or two over and over again). I think we do owe King some credit, though, for reviving interest in the horror genre, which seemed to be flagging before "Carrie."

Stephen King

His early short stories were unique, frightening and character driven (and some were intentionally funny and sarcastic). However, many of his novels are formulaic and borrow heavily from other authors better works (Dracula / Salem's Lot comes to mind, as well as Something Wicked This Way Comes / Needful Things, just to name two). Everything from "Bag of Bones" on is a waste of time. I think it was about this time that his publisher no longer required King to work with an editor. The films he was directly responsible for (Maximum Overdrive ((OMG that blew)) Sleep Walkers ((stinker)) etc.) were God awful. Again, no editorial input to rein him in. He is one rich SOB, though.

Stephen King used to to publish excellent and original stories, which were real innovations at that time. Unfortunately, it is not the case anymore. Now, most of his new stories overused the same formula to the point of no originality. Moreover, he seems to be very obsessed with details that are very very unnecessary for the readers to know. Indeed, he's still original, but there is no point in wasting 3/4 of a book by reading insipid informations.

Stephen King

Stephen King is a powerful writer. The one thing that best exemplifies this for me is when I remember how I was brought to tears by the time I was done reading The Long Walk.

I also think his vulgar mouth is great. Some of the things he writes are just laugh out loud funny. He isn't afraid to reveal really embarrassing things about his characters. Stephen King writing something really disgusting or disturbing can be a thing of twisted beauty.

But I got over Stephen King. I remember not being able to get past the first 100 pages of Gerald's Game. That was the last book I read of his (and like I just admitted, I couldn't even read the whole thing). I've heard his career has just gotten worse since then. I'll just have to take the haters' word for it, because I will not be reading more Stephen King anytime soon.

The one thing I'll never forgive Stephen King for is the movie Sleepwalkers. It was one of the worst movies ever made. A woman kills a man by stabbing him with a cob of corn in that movie. He should be ashamed of himself for his involvement in that shit.

They aren't necessarily bad endings because somebody sees them that way. They are just endings. The way he writes illustrates the spontaneity of living at the moment--no perfect acts of heroics, completely human--and bringing out the dimensions of his characters allow you to FEEL the story rather than just simply read it. The endings are just that . . . endings. The way I see it is that he figures lives are plotless and why should a story be bombarded with guidelines.
Stephen King is a genius . If you haven't read his books, don't be putting him down. I dont honestly think you could read Green mile and call him a bad author . It is not just the writing that counts, but the story

He comes up with great ideas but cannot write worth a crap. King is lucky that most people are idiots and are willing to gobble up the steaming bile that spews out from each turn of the page from any of his book.
