Alex Penner seems like he enjoys living in the Wild West.
If Friday’s game was any indication, he’ll be well-received as a member of the Colorado Eagles.
Seconds after dismantling Arizona’s Cedric Bernier in a second-period fight during the Eagles 3-1 preseason win at the Budweiser Events Center, Penner celebrated his victory by doing a shootout routine, pointing each hand like a gun in the air a couple of times before putting them back in their imaginary holsters.
It was just one of several things the potential Colorado Eagles player did to draw the attention of the 4,600 fans in the team’s only preseason game.
Penner and the Eagles brought quite a bit of attitude to the ice on Friday.
“This was the start I was looking for,” said the 6-foot-4 Penner, the little brother of Colorado goaltender Andrew Penner. “We wanted to show that we’re one of the best, not just one of the top skill teams, but one of the toughest teams. ... We’re not going to back down from no one.”
Coming into the game, the third-year pro who spent his rookie season in Laredo was looking to get noticed on a big stage. Safe to say he did what he came out to do.
“I wanted to get the feet going, make some hits and establish a reputation back in this league. I was looking forward to getting into a fight; if one didn’t come then I was going to make one come,” Penner said.
“I didn’t expect to get two.”
“The way he controlled himself until something happened, that’s like a seasoned enforcer-type guy. I thought he did a great job of handling that,” head coach Kevin McClelland said.
