Getting close to the trading deadline, it looks like the Leafs are on the bubble again. I'd prefer the Leafs build for tomorrow, then this year's playoffs which might not even happen.

Goaltenders

• The Leafs are pretty deep in the goaltending position, but we don't have a goalie that ranks in the top 10 in the NHL.
• Raycroft and Aubin are NHL caliber goalies.
• Justin Pogge is the future. Many expect him to become a top 10 NHL goalie, but he has struggled a bit with the Marlies this season.

Defensemen

• The Leafs also have great depth on D, but than we have one of the most expensive D-lines in the NHL at $20M/year.
• Kaberle, McCabe and Kubina are all-star capable defensemen. Gil is a good quality defenseman to have short handed.
• White and Colaiacovo are more than capable 5th and 6th defensemen.
• Bell, Wozniewski, Harrison and Kronwall all have NHL potential.
• I'm of the opinion that we should trade Kubina or McCabe. Not that either are not good D-men, but they effectively play the same position as the big shot from the point on the power play. Having both on the same team is effectively a waste.

Forward

• The Leafs also have great depath at forward, but lack the offensive superstars that most contenders have.
• Stajan, Wellwood, Steen, Ponikarovsky, Antropov, Pohl are young players under contract for some years that form a good basis for building forward.
• Sundin, Tucker, Green, O'Neil, Kilger, Peca, Devereaus, Belak, Battaglia are veterans, good and bad.
• I believe Toronto should trade Tucker and O'Neil before the deadline as they both are unrestricted free-agents this summer, unless they sign home-town discount contracts before the deadline. I'd hate to make the same mistake we did with McCabe and have to pay them a premium before the free-agency period to keep them on board.

The Future

• Pogge, Raycroft
• Kaberle, McCabe, Gil, White, Colaiacovo
• Sundin, Ponikarovsky, Antropov
• Wellwood, Stajan, Steen
• Peca, Kilger, Battaglia
• Pohl, Belak

This is the best game of the 2006-7 season. Great goals. A big hit by Chris Neal. Lots of fights. Two coaches harping. Two goalies brawling and The Razor Emery Show.

The NHL didn't publish video of the fights. I suspect that Ruff and Peters will be suspended for mulitple games.

Some people will point to this as a reason why NHL can't suceed in the States. Listen to the announcers and fans! They are wrong. And try to get a ticket for the re-match on Saturday.
