Congrats Chicago but...
It was great watching the Chicago White Sox win the World Series. It's nice to see a new team win. That said, it's very boring to watch the Yankees, Astros, Cardinals, Red Sox and Braves compete in the playoffs year-after-year. It really sucks having a team in the A.L. East. How are my Blue Jays ever going to win when both the Sox and Yanks have more salary in the starting infield than the entire Blue Jays roster. Basically, most of the league are simply feeder teams for the top half dozen super teams. This equates to the entire league being fixed to hand the World Series to the Yankees every year or two. Boring! I guess it's a lot like European soccer now.

Marlies v. Americans

I'm watching the game and didn't really expect to blog anything, but then I just had to. Hockey sucks! In the NHL and the AHL. You see, at the start of the season it was great watching players go to the penalty box for slashing, hooking, holding and all that junk that hasn't been called for years. The players to their credit adapted and removed that type of play from their game. The refs on the other hand, didn't like that they were no longer calling a dozen penalties per game and have stepped up the penalty calls to include stuff that's not against the rules. For instance, if you lose the puck in your skates and a player reaches near your feet to take the puck, then you simply have to fall and that's called tripping. What you can't dig the puck out from between a players skates? Hmm! I guess killing penalties is easier than I thought. Simply put the puck between your skates and when they try to dig it out, you fall and they get a penalty. This is not the only type of stupid penalty that is common-place in both the AHL and NHL. Further, if you lift someones stick with your own. That's hooking. If you take your hand off your stick and push a players (who has the puck) that's holding.

Stop the insanity.

Argos

It's a pretty good sign that you'll be in the Grey Cup when you destroy the 1st place team on their own turf. Argos are leading the Alouettes 49-23, in Montreal, late in the fourth. They'll take over first place and most likely the Als and Argos will meet again in Toronto next month in the CFL East championship game. This time, it'll be in Toronto.

Scoring Streaks by Rookies
Ovechkin broke a record tonight and Crosby failed to tie that same record. The record? Scoring streak from the start of your NHL career. Trivia! Who's held the record yesterday, before Ovechkin broke it? It's not Gretzky. Lindros and Lemieux were close 2nd and 3rd.

Hockey Canada preliminary roster

CP: Preliminary Team Canada roster for 2006 Turin Olympics released Wednesday by Hockey Canada.

http://www.nhl.com/news/2005/10/239358.html

Randy: I organized the players by their likelyhood of being selected. I placed all reasonably young players who played well on the 2004 Canada World Cup team (marked *) and complimented it with players who are obvious choices (2002 Canada Olympic team marked **). Injuries will change everything, but as it stands, either Theodore or Turco will be the 3rd goalie, one of Blake, Foote, Jovocop and Pronger will be the 7th defenceman and one of a long list of players could be the 12th and 13th forward.

Controversy in White Sox 9th Inning Victory

NBC5: AJ Pierzynski struck out to end the bottom of the ninth, but ran to first base anyway, believing the ball had hit the dirt. Replays showed that the homeplate umpire appeared to call Pierzynski out, and the Angels players were already leaving the field, but after Pierzynski reached first base, the umpire called him safe. The next batter, Joe Crede, hit the ball off the left field wall, knocking in the winning run.

Randy: The umpire, Doug Eddings, made what may be the worst call in baseball history.

Lindros ties Clarke
Last night when Eric Lindros scored his goal, he pointed up to the press box. I think he pointing to Bobby Clarke. You see, that goal tied them for 100th all-time in goal scoring.

I really hope Belfour doesn't mind being a backup goalie. Leafs won. Belfour is 0-3. Tellqvist is 1-0.

Leafs v. Sens, Game 3

Another loss, but 2 points in 3 losses is not terrible, in fact, four more saves would have translated that into 3 wins. That said, it's hard to be happy when your goalie has an .857 save percentage. Expect Tellqvist in net tomorrow against Philadelphia. Chad Kilger had three great opportunities to score, but failed to score any goals. Czerkawski and Allison have one assist each after three games.

NHLers to lose 12%

TSN: That 12% figure will be re-adjusted three more times within the next year depending on how much more NHL teams spend on player salaries.  As part of the CBA, the NHL has guaranteed not to spend more than 54% of designated league revenues.

Randy: The players just keep paying for their stupidity last year.

Canadian v Leafs, Game 2

I had a hockey party, so I wasn't able to blog during the game. I watched only about half the game, as I was entertaining most of the time. If you look at the stats sheet, then  you'll quickly realize why they lost 5-4.

That was Toronto's 3rd defensive unit and they were on for both of Montreal's 3rd period goals. The other 4 d-men were a combined +6. Eric Lindros, stepping in for Sundin, was doubled shifted, had two assists and was the 2nd star. Belfour hasn't looked great in the first two games, so expect Tellqvist in net on Monday in Ottawa (first of two in two days).

Fri, 07 Oct 2005 18:40:33 GMT
Probable Lineup for Saturday

Ponikarovsky, Lindros, Antropov (Sundin out)
Tucker, Allison, Czerkawski
Wellwood, Stajan, Steen (O'Neil injured)
Kilger, Wilm, Perrot (Domi slight injury)

Kaberle, McCabe
Berg, Khavanov
Belak, Wozniewski (Klee injured)

Belfour, Tellqvist

Rumour has Mats Sundin telling a reporter that he'll wear a visor when he returns.

No More Icings
The biggest improvement in the rules is the new icing rules that disallow changing players on an icing call. I'm watching my 3rd game this season and I've seen less than 10 icings.
Thu, 06 Oct 2005 18:50:26 GMT
Sundin out indefinitely with fracture

TSN: Mats Sundin of the Toronto Maple Leafs will be out indefinitely after he suffered a fractured orbital bone early in the first period of the Leafs' 3-2 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators Wednesday night.

Northwest Division Predictions
  1. Vancouver Canuks - Top team in the west. Their top line (Naslund, Morrison, Bertuzzi) will be pushed for power play time (Sedins). Come playoff, it's all upto Cloutier. 100+ point team.
  2. Calgary Flames - The Stanley Cup finalist are better (Amonte, Hamrlik, Langkow, McCarty), but will be hard pressed to repeat the fluke. Definate playoff team.
  3. Colorado Nordique - This team can score; Blake, Brisebois, Brunette, Hejduk, Sakic, Tanguay, Turgeon, but will likely struggle defensively. Goog enough to make the playoffs.
  4. Edmonton Oilers - One of the best D's (Cross, Pronger, Smith, Staios), might not be enough to compensate for unproven goaltending and poor offense.
  5. Minnesota Wild - These guys are in the wrong division. The AHL might be better suited. It's Jacque Lemaire magic or they have zero playoff chance.
Wed, 05 Oct 2005 21:08:24 GMT
Pacific Division Predictions
  1. Dallas Star - Should win the division with all around talent. Turco and Hedberg in goal. Boucher, Klemm, Skoula, Robidas, Zubov in back. Arnott, Barnes, Guerin, Lehtinen, Modano, Morrow on the offense.
  2. Phoenix Coyotes - With Gretzky behind the bench who knows where they'll finish. Beyond Gretzky, they should make the playoffs with Joseph and Boucher in net, Gauthier, Hulse, Mara, Morris, Tanabe as a very mobile young d-line and a reasonable attack with Comrie, Johnson, Nedved.
  3. Anaheim Mighty Ducks - Playoff team. Giguere in net, Carney, Marshall, Niedermayer, Ozolinsh, Salei, Vishnevski on D and Fedorov, Selanne, Sykora to supply the offense.
  4. San Jose Sharks - Good D (Hannan, McLaren, Stuart) some offensive (Marleau, Sturm) and good in goal (Nabakov). A 50-50 playoff team, but not more.
  5. Los Angeles Kings - Could struggle defensively (Garon, Dempsey, Visnovsky, Norstrom, Miller), but have enough offense (Conroy, Frolov, Demitra, Roenicke, Robitaille, Bure) to keep them in the playoff hunt, but will likely fall short.
Wed, 05 Oct 2005 20:54:10 GMT
Central Division Predictions
  1. Detroit Red Winds - Getting older, but they still should be able to compete for a playoff spot.
  2. St Louis Blues - Strong D (Backman, Brewer, Salvador, Weinrich, Jackman), but will struggle to score goals. Fringe playoff team.
  3. Nashville Predators - Mobile D-man (Allison, Eaton, Hamhuis, Markov, Suter, Timonen) might work in the new NHL. Paul Kariya is key. Will struglle to make playoff.
  4. Columbus Blue Jackets - This entire division has strength on D and will have difficulty offensive. Columbus is no exception. Will struglle to make playoff.
  5. Chicago Black Hawks - Will struggle offensively, but with Aucoin and Khabibulin they still have an outside chance of fluking their way into the playoffs.
Wed, 05 Oct 2005 17:00:20 GMT
Atlantic Division Predictions
  1. Philadelphia Flyers - This team will win with Forsberg and Esche and lose otherwise.
  2. New Jersey Devils - This team is gonna have a hard time scoring goals. Fortunately Brodeur should still get them into the playoffs, but no further.
  3. New York Islanders - If DiPietro becomes one of the top goalies in the NHL, then they are in the playoffs. Otherwise, I can't see a team captained by Yashin succeeding.
  4. Pittsburgh Penguins - Improving, but still too many holes on defense. Crosby and Lemieux will have to score a lot of goals to keep this team in the playoff hunt.
  5. New York Rangers - Sather is gambling that Europeans will dominate the new NHL. Weekes is gonna lead the league in saves and unfortunately goals against too.
Wed, 05 Oct 2005 16:56:04 GMT
Southeast Division Predictions
  1. Tampa Bay - Without Khabibulin, this is no longer a Stanley Cup contender. But still enough firepower up front to win the division easily.
  2. Florida Panthers - Very strong in net with Luongo, average everywhere else. They have a chance at making the playoffs.
  3. Carolina Hurricanes - Mediocre all around. Doesn't look like a playoff team.
  4. Atlanta Thrashers - Hossa is gonna find out it's a lot hard to score on a bad team. They need work on their golf game.
  5. Washington Capitals - An awesome youngster named Ovechkin and the worst D in hockey history; Biron, Heward, Witt. It's a good thing they have three goalies (Zolzig, Johnson, Ouellet).

Gameday: Maple Leafs vs. Senators

Today is the day. Hockey returns, after a 15 month absense. The Senators could be the best team in the NHL. The Leafs could also win the Cup, but only with the old Lindros and Allison. Game on!

http://www.torontomapleleafs.com/story.ml?n=5004

Wed, 05 Oct 2005 03:39:54 GMT
Northeast Division Prediction
  1. Ottawa Senators - Barring an injury to Hasek, Ottawa should win the division with well over 100 points. Chara, Phillips, Redden on D and too many forwards to stop. Spezza and Heatley could both finish in the top 5 in scoring.
  2. Toronto Maple Leafs - Toronto's position in the standings will depend entire on Sundin, Lindros and Allison. Possibly the best trio of centers to play on one team.
  3. Montreal Canadians - Montreal has the type of small team that could work in the new NHL. If the penalties are called all year, they could easily finish ahead of Toronto.
  4. Boston Bruins - The Bruins have a great team outside of their d-men; Dallman, Gill, Leetch (over the hill) and Slegr. The lack of d-men makes them a fringe playoff team.
  5. Buffalo Sabres - The Sabres don't have the firepower, the d-men or the goaltending to make the playoffs. Might be a long season.

Probable Lines

This was the lines used in the pre-season win vs the Red Wings on Saturday.

Sundin, Antropov, Ponikarovsky
Allison, Czerkawski, Tucker
Stajan, O'Neil, Steen (Wellwood)
Lindros, Domi (Perrott), Kilger (Wilm)

Kaberle, McCabe
Berg, Khavanov
Belak, Wozniewski (Klee injured)

Belfour, Tellqvist

A lot of teams are going with 20 players. If Toronto went with 20, then I'd cut Steen, Perrott, Wilm and Wozniewsky.
