Interstate Batteries Truck
I was suprised last week to find an Interstate Batteries truck painted the colors of Kyle Busch and Bobby Labonte's #18 NASCAR. Racing is not a popular sport in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. I doubt anybody in the parking lot understood the significance of the paint job.

O'Canada at Carfax 400, Michigan

They played the Canadian national anthem at the Carfax 400, Michigan International Speedway. I wasn't expecting it, so I didn't tape from the beginning.

Sports Trivia Posers
You have to love sports trivia posers. Now, admittedly I'm also wrong on sports trivia once in awhile, but I'm amazed how many people will sit at a bar and BS their friends to death on sports trivia.

Today, I had that pleasure. First, the guy told his friends that Jean Beliveau won 15 cups as a player and two as an executive. I told him, it was only ten as a player and Henri Richard had 11. Then, he bragged to his friends that the U.S. Miracle on Ice game was actually a semi-final game and not a finals. I told him it was neither, rather it was a round robin system. He looked at me stunned, he clearly thought I was stupid. He then wondered with his friends where Canada was at that Olympics, but I knew he wouldn't believe me when I told him the Olympics didn't allow professionals back then. Finally, they started talking about the overpriced TFC versus AC Milan game this summer. I told them I thought it was Real Madrid and excused myself from any further conversation. Honestly, the average sports fan knows next to nothing of which he speaks.

The funny part is that these guys were older then me and should remember Jean Beliveau and the Miracle on Ice better than I. In fact, I never saw Beliveau play.

Bill McCreary Sucks
This years Pens-Wings series is IMO the worst reffed NHL Stanley Cup finals series that I've watch. And I've watched nearly every period of every finals game since the late 70s. Four major incidents come to mind and all five were in favor of the same team, the Detroit Red Wings. I've seen bad reffing before, but the calls went both ways. Let me start with the four incidents.
  • Game 1 - Zetterberg puts his hand on the puck in the crease. I gave the ref the benefit of the doubt here. This could've been called a penalty shot for the Penguins.
  • Game 2 - Zetterberg puts his hand on the puck in the crease on an apparent goal. Neither the goal was allowed, nor the obvious penalty shot. I cannot give the benefit of the doubt two games in a row. Again in favor of the Wings.
  • Game 2 - Winning goal is scored on a blatant non-call. Again in favor of the Wings.
  • Game 4 - Empty net clear breakaway situation is not called an automatic goal. Again in favor of the Wings.
  • Entire series the refs have ignored calling penalties while the Wings have struggled on both the power play and short handed. Again in favor of the Wings.
  • Sidebar. Bill McCreary was on the ice for three of the four bad calls and is primarily responsible for most of the non-calls both ways. I still remember this guy putting away the whistle while Canada won the World Cup (or maybe the Olympics, maybe both). He'll be in the Hall of Fame one day. An insult to every good ref, player and builder.

    GST in Canada
This is just a note to our paid members that we have implemented a 5% GST tax on all orders from Canada. We never considered doing this before as we didn't really get significant revenues from Canada. This will add $1.45 to gold memberships, $0.90/$0.60 to silver and $0.45/$0.30 to bronze. Members outside of Canada will not be subject to the tax.

        Q. What do you call 30 millionaires around a TV watching the Stanley Cup Playoffs?
        A. The Toronto Maple Leafs
        Q. What do the Toronto Maple Leafs and Billy Graham have in common?

        Q. How do you keep the Toronto Maple Leafs out of your yard?
        A. Put up a goal net.
        Q. What do you call a Toronto Maple Leaf with a Stanley cup ring?

Thanks to my brother Matt for the jokes!

    Sports and Politics
If I were to pick two people I wish were Prime Minister of Canada, then I'd pick Michael Pinball Clemons and Ken Dryden, two sports stars. Why? They seem honest in their opinion where convention politician lawyers seem more like con-artists. What do you think? Leave a comment.

    Hockey Night in Canada?

It's Saturday night, the Leafs are on TV and CBC is running a movie. I grew up watching the Leafs play hockey on CBC every Saturday night of the regular season. I'm 39. I'm confused. I watched a movie for 5 minutes on CBC before I figured out something was wrong. Actually, I didn't figure it out. It was my son. He told me that this was a movie and not hockey. I was waiting. I likely would've waited for an hour before I figured out that this movie wasn't a hockey game. All good things. The world has changed forever.

Update: I just realized, this game doesn't count, it's exhibition and that's why it's not on CBC. What thru me off is that the NHL season has started already for 4 teams today. Others are still playing pre-season games.

Ranking Continue to Drop Alexa ranks continue to drop. World-wide week rank is now 77,229. Canada is 8,533 and U.S. 20,804. I expect the U.S. ranking to drop below 20,000 in the next few days.

    Steve Downie Bandwagon

I love reader what people are writing about the Steve Downie situation. Total bandwagon jumping. I have to wonder if some of these guys have even seen the hit. MG Franklin of writes "Senators' centre Dean McAmmond suffered a concussion after being hit from behind and into the glass by Steve Downie of the Flyers." From behind? Into the glass? is a major publisher here in Canada. I reponded in Franklin's comments that it wasn't from behind or into the glass. He chose not to publish my comment. Others, including the NHL seem to be claiming the hit was late, yet it occured less than 1 second after McAmmond passed the puck. What happened to two steambolts (2 seconds)?

    Eric and Jordan Staal
It looks like fast times at Eric Staal's bachelor party landed many of the Staals in jail. The Toronto is reporting the incident. Some pics were also posted on this website.

    Schubert's Knee on Malkin
I just saw a replay of Christoph Schubert's knee on Evgeny Malkin in Game 1. That looked very blatant. No suspension!?

    Don Cherry on NBC
Don Cherry will make is debut on NBC tonight. He's been the main character on CBC (the premier hockey TV station in Canada) for years and he's been very controversial.
