I think Billy Collins' poetry is weak. It's bland, and not in the dry, admirable way that Frost was. Just because his poetry sells doesn't mean it's good. Why must we be forced to judge a poet by the number of copies he/she sells? I've read a good deal of his work, and there's the occasional poem that earns a nod, but by far there's no heart. And I personally believe that poetry is better when the reader can feel the poet, or there's more resonance... As a young writer that would love to have Collins' recognition, I'm also bewildered, dumbfounded at myself, that if that level of poetry is all that needs to be achieved that I haven't yet submitted my work to a publisher. No offense to Mr. Collins but I often eat Alphabet Soup, and just as often shit out better work. This is my opinion, and I understand Billy Collins' work is, obviously, enjoyed by many. I can respect that. It's just not my favorite cigarette.
