That was not the case last year. Wilson revealed that his pitching elbow hurt in all of 2011, not just in August when he went on the disabled list. He also said the hip/slash back ailment that delayed his pitching last spring training also was persistent throughout the year.
Wilson said that in response to a question about why some of his stats were worse last year. He suggested the elbow pain was enough to sideline a pitcher for a few days to let it rest.
“A lot of people in the room are OK with that. I’m not OK with that,” Wilson said. “I don’t want to take days off.”
In his bullpen session this morning, Wilson said he was supposed to throw 75-80 percent of normal velocity. But he topped that easily with his last few fastballs.
“Just testing the waters,” he said.
“I feel like I’m right on schedule. We have a pretty detailed map of bullpens and throwing. This was just another check off the checklist. Standard bullpen. I’m not really looking too deeply into it. As far as pain, there were no ailments, no tweaks.”
Manager Bruce Bochy said Wilson looked better than he did throwing three days ago, and Bochy expects Wilson to pitch during the second week of exhibition games.
