First I will start with the positives of having Jack Cust on the A's, then I will follow with why he hurts the team. Positives: Over the last three years Jack Cust has hit 79 home runs, the most on the current A's roster. All the while accumulating 290 walks, 216 RBIs and a great On Base Avg. of .376. His third season is not over so the RBI, BB, and HR totals should still be on the rise. Not bad when looking at only three batting categories. He provides much needed base runners and power to the lineup. Now for the Negatives: In those same three years Cust has struck out (501) more times than he has gotten a hit (312), games played (391) and runs and RBIs combined (458). In looking at this comparison I find it unreasonable to hold on to such a liability at the plate who lacks the ability to be a productive out. There are no bad hops in the air, but he can't even keep a pitch out of the catcher's glove. A productive out consists of moving runners, laying down a sac bunt or sac fly. He just can't do it. In 2008 he struck out 197 times in just 148 games, unbelievable and unacceptable. Not to mention that his batting average has yet to top the .260 mark (2007-.256; 2008-.231; 2009-.243). His BA over the last three seasons is .242 and he averages 1.3 Ks per game. If he got as many hits as strikeouts this conversation would be moot however, that is not the case. Conclusion: It is time for the A's to let Jack Cust go. I understand that everyone has their holes in their games but his are too big to ignore for a hope that he might hit a homerun. He strikes out 6 times to every 1 homerun (K/HR Ratio = 6/1). The numbers don't lie. If you have ever seen him play in the outfield as well the argument to let him go is that much easier. He has below average speed and a below average arm. Too many balls fall in front of him and get behind him. With Rajai Davis, Ryan Sweeney and Scott Hairston, a guy who has a better chance at making a play in the outfield and contact with a pitch, it does the team a disservice to play him in the field. Now I wouldn't want people talking about letting me go but it is a reality that he just isn't worth what he costs us. |

:: Full Story (79 comments) The A’s Don’t Have Openings At SS And CF – And That’s The Problem by Nico Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 08:26:09 AM PDT I wish the A’s didn’t have a SS or a CF – because then they’d be forced to go out and get one with the rather substantial payroll, and 40-man roster, flexibility Oakland has right now. As it stands, the high draft picks used to select Bobby Crosby and Cliff Pennington have left Oakland with one offensive albatross at SS and no help on the way. The immedia |
