Ramos home, rescue details emerge
November 12, 2011, 11:06 am

Venezuelan police commandos raided a house in the mountains about an hour from Wilson Ramos' home last night, exchanged gunfire with the catcher's abductors and then rescued him from a bedroom and whisked him away to be reunited with family members.

"The truth is, at the moment they came to get me I was very nervous," Ramos told reporters early this morning outside his family's house. "There were many gunshots ... thanks to God, those guys did a tremendous job. I'm super grateful to them."

Roughly 51 hours after he was abducted by four armed men outside his home near Valencia, Ramos was back at the same location, greeted by ecstatic family members, friends, media and other well-wishers who had been anxiously awaiting his return.

"Thanks to God!" Ramos' mother, Maria Campos, exclaimed on Venezuelan television. "Thanks to my country, to my neighbors and to my family, who were supporting us."

After an exhaustive search, police discovered Ramos being held in a home in the mountainous region of Carababo state, not far from where they found two vehicles believed to have been used in the kidnapping.

Ramos said he did not know who his abductors were but could tell they were Colombian from their accents. They said little to him throughout the entire ordeal.

"They simply told me to cooperate, that they were going to ask for a ton of cash for me," he told reporters. "They put me in a room with a bed. I was lying there. It was hard for me to think about, if I was going to get out alive, first of all ... about how my family, my mother were."

Five men were arrested in conjunction with the kidnapping, Venezuelan justice minister Tareck El Aissami announced.

Following his rescue, Ramos underwent medical tests to ensure he was uninjured.

"They didn't physically harm me," he said. "But psychologically, I underwent very great harm."

Ramos said he intends to resume playing "as soon as I feel all right."

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo spoke with Ramos late last night and was assured the 24-year-old catcher had been unharmed.

"I join Wilson in thanking the many law enforcement officials in Venezuela and investigators with Major League Baseball who worked tirelessly to ensure a positive ending to what has been a frightening ordeal," Rizzo said in a statement. "The only detail that concerns us tonight is that Wilson is safe. The entire Washington Nationals family is thankful that Wilson Ramos is coming home."

WILSON'S BACK!
Wilson Ramos found safe by authorities

Venezuelan authorities found him in the mountains in the state of Carapopo. He's currently with the Internal Affairs Minister, who has already contacted the Ramos family.

I don't think it would be a mistake for Wilson to make a permanent move to the US and have his family moved there as well, for the sake of their safety.

I'd want to find the kid that got the autograph before the thugs showed up at the Ramos residence. Innocent until proven guilty, but it would be interesting to find out if he had any connection to it (paid to confirm that this was the house they wanted, or was the kid a lucky fan who was unaware of what was about to happen).

Vigils are being held at sporting events and college campuses across Venezuela, all demanding Wilson's release. Even the national papers are pleading with the kidnappers to let Wilson go.

Police have just been given confirmation that Wilson Ramos is still alive. I didn't see any info on line about his receiving a signing bonus. He made the league minimum of $415,000 this past year - not a huge sum when you figure on taxes and living expenses in the U.S. and Venezuela. BUT he lives in a crime ridden city where people have no problem breaking into houses while the family is home, assaulting them, and tying them up just to score some cash. So the amount of cash probably doesn't matter too much to these thieves.

Sending out big prayers for him and his loved ones.

I'm from the Tim Lincecum (Giants) forum and just wanted to add my thoughts and prayers to the efforts to get Wilson home safely. All of us on the Lincecum Girlfriend forum are with you at this frightening time.

More details emerge about the kidnapping of Wilson Ramos

Among them:
* Wilson signed an autograph for a young fan shortly before the kidnappers pulled up.
* An orange Chevrolet Captiva was the primary vehicle. Another vehicle was involved. The Captiva had no license plates and heavily tinted windows.
* Two men got out of the Captiva and approached Wilson. One got him in a headlock and pressed a 9mm pistol to Wilson's head.
* Wilson's father, brother, and a cousin were home with him at the time. No one else was taken.

Venezuela police still expect Wilson to be returned alive once a ransom is posted. What is scary is that no progress has been made. Although Venezuela police are confident he's alive, there is still a chance that this may not end well at all.

(CNN) -- Gunmen kidnapped Major League Baseball catcher Wilson Ramos from his family home in Venezuela Wednesday night, a spokeswoman for his Venezuelan team said on her Twitter account.

Ramos, who finished his rookie season with the Washington Nationals this year, was back in his home country playing for the Aragua Tigers in Venezuela's winter league.

The Nationals could not confirm the kidnapping, but they published a statement citing Tiger's spokeswoman Kathe Vilera.

Ramos was kidnapped by four armed men from his home in Santa Ines, in Carabobo state, Vilera said on Twitter.

"It's sad, worrisome and true that Wilson Ramos was kidnapped," she wrote.

Response to the kidnapped quickly reached the highest echelons of the Venezuelan government.

The vehicle believed to have been used in the kidnapping was found in the town of Bejuma, about 60 miles from where Ramos was kidnapped, the country's justice and interior minister, Tareck El Aissami, said Thursday.

"The best investigators we have" are on the case, he said.

Unlike most Latin American countries, it is not soccer that rules in Venezuela, but baseball. A number of Venezuelan players make it to the major leagues in the United States.

Ramos, 24, emerged as the Nationals' top catcher this past season. He had a .267 batting average with 15 home runs and 52 runs batted in.

"Prudence and an even head are important in this difficult moment that the Ramos family is going through," Tigers President and General Manager Rafael Rodriguez said in a statement. "With God's help we will end up well in this complicated situation."

For those who haven't heard, Wilson was kidnapped at gunpoint by four men at his home in Venezuela earlier today. He was last seen being forced into a truck.

Kidnappings are at an epidemic level in Venezuela. The prime targets are the wealthy, as holding someone ransom for a lot of money can yield a very quick payday. Due to Wilson's success in the US, it's no surprise he became a target. All we can do is hope he is okay.
