Many of you are misinformed. Royce Gracie beat many reputable fighters that outweighed him by 40 lbs or more. He beat Ken Shamrock (who is no pushover) whe Shamrock weighed 220 lbs. Royce did act dishonorably by taking steroids. He als acted cowardly by challenging Benny the Jet (the world famous #1 kickboxer in the world at the time) to fight only to back out of it when he learned Benny had ben well trained in grappling for many years. He also challenged a 60 year old Gene LeBell to fight (which was cowardly) in a desperate attempt to substantiate his relatively unknown and unproven BJJ. Royce did a lot to bring the MMA sport to the mainstream, but his scumbag sense of entitlement and his inability to completely own an opponent in the octagon (especially from his feet) make him a bittersweet legend. By and large, he is a very effecicient fighter, but far from the best. The best never say they are the best, they merely show you that they're the best. Long live George St Pierre!!!

Outside of the Gracie owned and controlled UFC so called tournaments from Nov 1993 to Dec 1994 , Royce Gracie's record isn't very good. Even with all the Gracie politics and special treatment, Sakuraba made Royce look like a spoiled brat getting a spanking. Yoshida put Royce to sleep and Royce acted like a complete fool. Wallid Ismail put Royce to sleep. 145 pound Hideo Tokoro made Royce look like a damn fool. Then Hughes went easy on him and still bashed his bald head in. Royce's second fight with Sakuraba was supposed to be 5 rounds then at the last minute it was changed to 3 rounds. Royce didn't look good and then got caught for using Steroids.

The Gracie family puportedly invented this "original" style of jujitsu but they actually just stole it from japanese judo and incorporated some wrestling. Their family had powerful and influential people that just implanted their arrogance and lies into the mix to make them more powerful and important seeming. Like the other guy said its all marketing. Just hype. They are pathetic, attention seekers. I don't care how good they fight they are still over-hyped fakes.

The entire family sucks. The legend of the Gracies is all marketing. Brilliant marketing but still marketing. BJJ is JUDO! Actually it's the ground work of judo. BJJ fans hate that... but it's true... if you look up the history Helio was a judo student AND BJJ doesn't have a single technique that is exclusive to BJJ... they are all recorded judo techniques from the 1800's. Great martial art though.

royce wasn't even good at BJJ in Brazil. He hasnt won any reputable BJJ tournaments.

Thats bull Royce is probably one of the greatest MMA fighters around you guys need to read some history on Royce and the rest of the Gracie family. They deserve much respect MMA wouldnt be what it is today if it wasn't for Royce and the Gracie family.

If Gracie were to fight the worst fighter of the UFC right now, he wouldn't survive a minute. Matt Hughes is the only good fighter he has ever faced and he got DEMOLISHED. Would of ironically lost by submission too if Hughes didn't let go.

Royce is the reason we even have UFC as we know it. So many of the techniques wouldn't even be used if it weren't for Gracie. He deserves respect ..not all the BS comments he is getting. He will always be my fave.

Royce gracie only won matches because his family ran the ufc and hired the fighters. They specifically didn't get huge strong fighters. Put the gracies against good fighters today and they can't compare.

he always sucked! it was a matter of time that someone like hughes showed with true MMA is all about. I was tired of the Gracie hype and the gi being the be it all end it all! I am glad that wrestling is getting the credit it deserves in the MMA world.
