For Dirk, another shot comes up short 09:52 PM CDT on Thursday, May 14, 2009 By CHUCK CARLTON / The Dallas Morning News ccarlton@dallasnews.com Dirk Nowitzki understood that the Denver Nuggets were quicker, stronger and simply better than the Mavericks. That basketball reality did little to ease the sting of another year without an NBA title. "At this point, I don't play for making the playoffs or making the second round," Nowitzki said Thursday. "My goal is to win the championship. It's another opportunity that kind of slipped away from me." Nowitzki, who turns 31 next month, believes he still has a chance to claim a ring in Dallas. Based on the postseason, he's playing as well as ever. Nowitzki averaged 34.4 points, 11.6 rebounds and four assists against Denver. "I still feel like I have a good three [or] four years left of solid basketball," Nowitzki said. "I don't want to feel overanxious and put pressure on myself." But Nowitzki isn't oblivious to the Mavericks' deficiencies. Topping the list: defense. The defensive identity forged under former coach Avery Johnson has given way to breakdowns. Denver shot 58.5 percent in the clinching Game 5 and 50.6 percent in the series, attacking the rim often. "We used to be a pretty decent defensive team with Avery," Nowitzki said. "I don't think we're good enough defensively. We had great spurts there, great quarters and halves, but overall, defensively we weren't consistent enough." The defensive lapses impact the offense, Nowitzki said, especially Jason Kidd and the transition game. While Nowitzki noted that he could opt out of his max contract in 2010 and become a free agent, he said he hasn't considered the possibility. "After I played here for 11 years, played hurt, played sick, whatever they needed me to do, basically playing my heart out for the last 11 years, I don't think it would feel the same way somewhere else," Nowitzki said. "It's always been my dream here to finish my career and win a championship. I think my window has not closed yet." Nowitzki's playoff performance came against the emotional backdrop of criminal charges against his former girlfriend, Cristal Taylor. His only response Thursday was that it had been a difficult couple of weeks. His teammates noticed. "Look at what Dirk Nowitzki did, with everything that's been going on with him the last week and a half, two weeks," guard Jason Terry said. "They always talk about him being soft. It takes a strong individual to go through what he did and then carry us on his back through this whole playoffs. "If I'm not with Dirk next year or down the line, whenever we part ways, I've really grown to have a lot of respect for Dirk Nowitzki." |
