The Mother’s Day gift The picture window of the dining room looked out upon the shallow end of the swimming pool. Rose bushes and small trees ran all along the fence line. Taller bushes by the house nearly rendered the homes on either side invisible. As the elevation dropped off at the back of the yard, so did the homes of the neighboring subdivision, whose roof-lines ran level with the grass. The early-morning sky was a light blue and bright sunlight sparkled off the waves of the pool. Early
