Yea, it's just like Chinese don't like when you call them Japanese and vice versa. Nationality or race/ethnicity? Same difference, sometimes.  For them, it's both... if they were born in US, they'd be considered Chinese American or Japanese American even though they are not from China or Japan.  Blacks born in America obviously aren't from Africa, but are considered African American, so how does it become different for Latin countries??  This may explain why some Dominican Republicans consider themselves Dominicans and not Black or Black Dominican. Plus Dominicans are Hispanic, & Blacks/African Americans are Non-Hispanic. But don't get me wrong, I do think there are Black Dominicans in the Dominican Republic.  I just wanted to address the similarities between nationality and race/ethnicity.  SOMETIMES those words can be interchangeable. But I agree, maybe we should just get off this subject of race because afterall, we all are 1 race overall: THE HUMAN RACE!

@ 17:21:08 close your ignorant mouth, no point was made just another instance of people flapping their gums for the sake of creating more hot air!  black is not merely in reference to skin color, consider the preponderance of fair complected african americans.  people classify their ethnicity based upon whether or not they have african blood in their bloodlines, don't see many east indians calling themselves black no matter how dark their skin.

First of all you could be from African and be white or black, you could be from america and be african american, asian american, white american, mexican american. So yes you could be black and be DR. Also there are Britians that are black and asain. So black only discribes the color of ones skin not ethnicity.

I do read alot of books! However, most Dominicans I know say that are not Black, they are Dominican... the ones I know say that... So, that's what made me ask... maybe they don't read books.

Refer to Wed, 07 Oct 2009 20:14:20 Correction:

No Ada Aimee is definitely "black". She is Dominican.

I apologize for my poor grammer. If I had not forgotten the comma we wouldn't be having this current discussion.

If U research U will find that Ada Aimee is known as being the second "visiblely black" dominican woman to win Miss DR. Now that notion from the country of the DR supports U

calm it down kiddies!  before u attempt to educate know that of which you speak.  race, for all intents & purposes does not exist, the word you are looking for is ethnicity, as we all belong to the human race.  when i stated what i said about being black & dominican my point was clearly made...it is your ancestry that defines you not your location; i.e. african american, chinese american...do you need additional examples to understand the point?  in the D.R. they are still having issues with "race" chief among them the desire to be anything but "black", that is why Alfred was promoted to "criollo" one he had made his first set of NBA millions.  To the asian chick, you wouldn't be screaming about being "jamaican" if you weren't trying to get away from being asian.

Amen to the comment below! Are people that sheltered to the point that they don't know the difference between nationality and race? Just because your're from Germany doesn't automatically make you white, theres black germans etc. Your nationality is german, your race is black...just like being from DR, your nationality is dominican, your race could be black, white, hispanic, mixed...whatever. I'm jamaican and people still don't believe me cause they think all jamaicans are black, and this is coming from a asian girl!

Sad to say some of you girls need to read a book or something ....DR or Dominican Repub is a nationality not a race. Just like being German, French, American.Russian.

A Mind is a terrible thing to waste.

actually miss universe 2009 is Stefania Fernandez (formerly miss venezuela).  on to being black & dominican.  much like being from any country, if u have african blood in u then u are black.  you can be a black dominican or you can be criollo (that is not white but you have no negro/african blood in you) i am sure that like any other hyper-race culture they have a billion different words to describe just how "not black" u are or are not.
