Jeremy Bridges

CHARLOTTE -- Jeremy Bridges knew last Sunday that if something should happen to starter Keydrick Vincent, he would be the next man up at right guard.

No problem.  Even though all of his playing time this season had come at right tackle while Jeff Otah nursed an ankle injury that kept him sidelined four games, Bridges had started 10 games at right guard a year earlier and had made eight starts at the slot for the Arizona Cardinals in 2004.

But there was nevertheless a period of adjustment when he went to work in the fourth quarter of the 30-10 win over Denver while Vincent walked toward the southeast tunnel of Bank of America Stadium with a groin injury.

Bridges, by his own admission, was rusty.

"No doubt about it," he said. "They ran the ball behind me a couple of times, and it was just sloppy, because I demand perfection of myself at all times.  Footwork-wise, I was a little sloppy, and even though I'm getting the job done, I can always do better, and that's what this week is allowing me to do -- to sharpen up on the little things, the skill."

Bridges' work at right tackle earlier this season helped him adapt; moving inside one slot is not a Grand Canyon-esque leap by any stretch.

"It's just a different stance," he said. "A little different footwork.   As a right tackle, you should know what your right guard is doing, so assignment-wise, it's not really a mental challenge.  I know what I'm doing at right guard.  It wasn't much of adjustment."

With Vincent unable to practice on Wednesday and Thursday, Bridges has used the time to get comfortable once again if he's needed at right guard.

"I'm kind of getting back my sense at guard," Bridges said. "At tackle, you have to dance a little more than wrestle.  At guard, you've got to wrestle more than dance.

"The physicality is coming back into my steps, just the mental aspect of knowing it's going to happen a lot quicker than at tackle.  It's all coming back to me -- how to perfect it, as opposed to when I came in last week, I was kind of sloppy, but I got the job done."
