Little Shop of Horrors (2003 Broadway Revival Cast)
Does this score kick butt or what? While the staging of the 2003 Little Shop of Horrors revival is entertaining enough, the recording is even more rewarding. Since you're not distracted by the sight of a huge plant devouring one cast member after another, you can focus on Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's ace songs. No wonder the show is a high-school and summer-stock fave, packed as it is with appealing characters and catchy 1960s-flavored tunes. As Audrey, Kerry Butler won't make anybody forget Ellen Greene, but she certainly is lovely. Hunter Foster's Seymour strikes a perfect balance of sweetness and klutzy desperation as he delivers perfect interpretations of all his songs. Even better, this cast album is a complete rendition of the show, unlike the recording of the 1982 Off-Broadway production ("Call Back in the Morning" is now included for instance), and comes with a glossy booklet. Cherry on top: Five previously unreleased songs are included in demo versions performed by the show's authors. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story
In a departure from L.M. Montgomery's book series, this third TV movie jumps ahead to World War I and puts Anne and her beloved Gilbert smack in the middle of it. Instead of marrying Gilbert after her teaching days--as she does in the books--Anne spends a disillusioning year with him in New York City, and then the couple quickly marries before the good doctor ships out to France. (In the book Rilla of Ingleside, Anne's sons go to war and her youngest daughter is separated from her sweetheart.) Impetuous as ever, Anne joins the Red Cross and crosses the pond to track down her husband when his letters are returned unread. What follows is an adventure that takes her through battle zones--where the bodies pile up faster than you can say Saving Private Ryan--and on to London with a half-orphaned baby, her best friend's injured husband, and a tangle of international intrigue. Fans of the 10-book series may balk at the divergences and the fact that very little time is spent on Prince Edward Island. But the book's unrestrained romanticism and unapologetic sentimentality remain intact, as well as the surviving cast of the prior two movies, most notably Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert. Louie The Rune Solider Volume 1
The first installment in this new OAV series brings back the character of Jubei Yagyu, but not the artists or story line from the popular 1993 feature Ninja Scroll. A baroque mixture of samurai adventures, historic figures (Jubei and Shiro were real people), pseudo-Christian millenialism, and standard anime action, Resurrection is set at the close of the civil wars that led to the unification of Japan in the 17th century. Tokisada Shiro Amakusa is regarded as the Son of God by a group of Christians rebelling against the newly established Tokugawa Shogunate. Jubei tries to negotiate Shiro's surrender to end the rebellion, but fails. The resulting slaughter of Shiro's followers sets in motion a complicated plot involving a prophecy that if the new Savior is rejected, he will be reborn as Satan. Resurrection is exceedingly gory, even by anime standards: heads are split open, a violent rape ends in a bloodbath, a disemboweled warrior fights with his intestines flailing like tentacles, crows pick at cadavers. At a time when Hollywood films and TV shows are being blamed for youth violence in America, viewers may wonder why such bloody entertainments haven't produced real-life violence in Japan. --Charles Solomon
