Though Tortorella said there was good and bad with Michael Del Zotto in last night’s game, the coach left no doubt that he has been impressed with the young man’s mental approach throughout training camp.

"Michael is in much better shape," Tortorella said of the third-year defenseman who is trying to earn his way back to the NHL following last year’s midseason demotion to the AHL Whale. "I can tell through conversations we’ve had that he’s trying to work at this.

"He had some really good shifts and some struggles, but it’s a game of mistakes — as long you’re not making the same mistakes all the time."

you ppl who talk ish, prolly can't even hold a stick properly so hop off dz's dick! all criticizing him like you know what the hell you're talking about, like you're a hockey analyist or something! go write on gaborik's blog about how he could only net a goal against garbage teams but when the rangers need a big goal he's no where to be found! & rangers power play still sucks w/o dz so it has nothing to do with him!

If Michael Del Zotto never wears a Ranger jersey again, I won't be sad. Over a year and a half he has not gotten any better; at his age you should be able to see some gains and, if anything, he has gotten worse. He used to be able to carry the puck a little bit but now he gets rid of it at first check. He did have one good defensive play - credit given - but he still chases guys around looking for a hit. He doesn't seem to grasp that hitting should be used to separate the man from the puck. The blueline was just fine without him and next season there will be one, maybe two spots opening (Eminger and Gilroy) and MDZ hasn't shown anything this year to prove he deserves one of them. Maybe another summer with Gary Roberts can change that but Roberts can put him in good physical form but can't give him the mental discipline and confidence he needs.

Brian Leetch seems to be around a bit this season, perhaps he needs to be hired full time to coach Michael Del Zotto. The kid needs serious tutoring and if it won't come in Hartford, it needs to come at the country club training center. There is no debate left, a blind man can see MDZ has regressed. Something has to be done and throwing him minute after minute of ice time is not it. His mistakes, his indecision and his reluctance to shoot is a massive reason why the Ranger power play is a disaster.

*Sadly little can be done about the Czech vet but MDZ needs to be banished to the bus league, and fast. The kid is atrocious in his own zone, his passes are off the mark, he panics with the puck and is often too afraid to shoot the damn thing. This marked the second straight game where the opponent shined a mirror on the Rangers, showing the mistake they made with bringing MDZ into the NHL too soon. Alex Pietrangelo on Sunday and John Carlson tonight were both more rounded, smarter, steadier kids who were drafted in the same class but had an extra season of development. As mentioned here before, if Phoenix's Dave Tippet can send Kyle Turris to the AHL, the Rangers can do it with MDZ
