This will be in the St Pete Times today:

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The last thing Lightning D Kurtis Foster heard from teammate Paul Ranger was positive.

"Keep it going until I get back," Foster said Ranger texted.

"From everything I get from him, he will be back," Foster said. "We're all waiting for the day he will be back. It's not that we deserve an explanation or anything, you just hope he can take care of what he needs to."

Ranger, 25, has been on an indefinite leave of absence since Oct. 26 to deal with a personal matter, his circumstances one of the bigger mysteries around the league.

The defenseman, through the team, has declined interviews. The team, his family and agent also have been mum. Coach Rick Tocchet said he is in the dark, and even Foster, who roomed with Ranger on the road, said he has no clue what is troubling his teammate.

"I didn't see anything coming," Foster said.

But he is heartened by their occasional texts.

"He just said he had to deal with some stuff and he's doing okay," Foster said. "When your friend tells you he's doing okay, you just have to trust that and go from there. You hope for the best, and if he does need anything, you're there for him."

Foster said he can understand how some could see Ranger's absence as leaving the team shorthanded but added:

"In the long run, we're hockey players, but we're human beings. As cliche as that sounds, we want the best for each other whether it is on the ice or off. If you need to deal with stuff off the ice, we're there with him and behind him. Hopefully, he comes back sooner rather than later because he can really help our team."

Ranger, coach talk: Tocchet and D Paul Ranger spoke on the phone Sunday and had what the coach called a "positive conversation." Tocchet would not speculate on when or whether Ranger would return to the team and gave no information on why he was given a leave of absence.

Still no insight, but it's a bit of positive news

Nobody but the team knows the real reason as to why he left. It bothers me, but I just hope he takes the time that he needs and comes back when he's ready. I'm glad that the St Pete Times is keeping us updated (even if it is pretty vague) with the situation.

i'm sure he'll play whenever he gets back.We have way too many defensemen, but we don't have much quality. We're all waiting and hoping he'll be back soon.

Ok awesome Elle! I asked on a few other boards and I just bought my tickets... section 102 row k. They were pretty cheap compared to leafs tickets so I'm happy!!! Apparently the practices are closed... so that sucks. I really want to meet players and get autos... I hope you can find out some info!!!

I'm not sure of the answers to those questions, AJ, but I'll see what I can find out. I'm hoping to be able to attend that game, too.

Hey girls! I already posted this on Vinny and Stamkos' walls but I thought I would try here too!! I am going to be in Florida for the Jan 2 game when it is TB vs Penguins. I have been looking at tickets and they seem pretty cheap- any advice on where to or where not to sit? Also, anyone know where I could go for autographs from the visiting team and/or the home team? Also, does the visiting team have open practices? If they do, where are they held? Sorry for all these questions! I appreciate any answers anyone has!! Thanks!!!

OCTOBER 26, 2009

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Paul Ranger leaves the team for personal reasons

Not many details right now, but it appears Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Paul Ranger has at least temporarily left the team for what the team has described as personal reasons. Ranger was a late scratch from Saturday's game with the Sabres and did not practice Sunday.

Coach Rick Tocchet said Sunday Ranger had asked for a "personal leave," but declined to say more, citing Ranger's privacy. The Lightning is expected to make a statement later today.

Ya ... I am really wondering about that. He wasn't at today's (Sunday) practice either. I hope everything is okay.

Went to Tuesday's practice. I've missed seeing him on the ice. He let his hair grow out. I never knew his hair would be curly if it was longer.
