This and that...
The odds-makers like Serena Williams to win the U.S. Open, followed by Venus Williams and Dinara Safina. Chris Evert holds the record for the most successive U.S. Open wins by a woman--6. She holds second place for the most wins of all time, and the record for most wins in the Open Era--9. Tatiana Golovin has withdrawn from the U.S. Open. Elena Bovina won the GHI Bronx Tennis Classic on Sunday, defeating Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 6-3, 7-5 (after being down 3-5 in the second set). How strange i

Milliner's Dream: --Apparently, you can be too thin...(not that I would know...)
I appreciate reader comments regarding my “Duke faculty duties” letter to Professor Karla Holloway, a signatory of the Duke faculty “Group of 88’s” “listening” statement advertisement and a member of the Campus Cultural Initiative committee. A few readers said Holloway very likely will not respond. I hope she does, but I know she may not. In fact, she may not even read the letter. She could hit “delete” after the first few words.I hope she doesn’t and instead responds. But even if she doesn’t

Sugiyama Still Raring to Go
Paris, Ai Sugiyama may have matched the all-time record for consecutive grand slam appearances but the Japanese veteran insists she is still as excited to be playing as during her first major nearly 15 years ago. The 32-year-old`s determination showed no sign of abaiting as she battled through to a 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 victory against Russia`s Alla Kudryavtseva in a tie which was played over five hours because of rain delays at Roland Garros. Sugiyama, who has the longest grand slam streak for a wom

The French Tennis Federation announced on Monday that Tatiana Golovin and Sania Mirza have withdrawn from Roland Garros. Roland Garros begins this coming Sunday, May 25 in Paris, France. The French Open also officially removed Justine Henin, the three-time defending women’s champion from the entry list. In and around the grounds in Charleston
A view of the entry pathway to the stadium The weather was very chilly today, with a lot of wind. Fortunately, the wind did not pick up much during the night matches, so we were comfortable with a lot of layers and a stadium blanket. In honor, I suppose, of the 35th anniversary of the Cup, the stadium music this year consists of oldies only. If you keep your eyes and ears open, you notice a lot of people singing along to "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." Dominika Cibulkova had to retire in her

Family Circle Cup day 1--Wow!
Gisela Dulko put on a clay court clinic in her first round match The first match we saw today was a contest between Gisela Dulko and Alicia Molik, and Dulko was very impressive with great serving and the use of clever clay court strategy. So expertly did Dulko play that Molik was left with virtually nothing but her good serve, and today, Dulko's serve was just as good. Dulko def. Molik, 6-2, 6-3 Then we saw Yuliana Fedak take on Agnes Szavay. Fedak is a player I like to watch, both for her ten

More Family Circle Cup withdrawals
Sybille Bammer, as I suspected, has withdrawn from Charleston; I'm sure it must be because of her back. Also withdrawing are Caroline Wozniacki, Meilen Tu (a fixture at the Cup), Nuria Llagostera Vives (another fixture), and Peng Shuai (also a regular player there). Replacing them, respectively, are: Alicia Molik, Yuliana Fedak, Ekaterina Bychkova, Julie Ditty, and Anastasia Rodionova. Yuan Meng replaces Venus Williams, and the talented Sorana Cirstea replaces Justine Henin. I am especially di
